Sizing the system?
After having reduced the proposed energy requirements to a minimum, the next question in most cases is whether to design a system large enough to cope with poor weather conditions (no solar or no wind) or to size the system for normal conditions and have a back-up generator to charge the batteries during these periods.

The purchase of a generator and battery charger for occasional back-up will be far cheaper than sizing a power system to meet the worst possible weather conditions.

A generator is also convenient when using big electric motors (e.g. compressor), welders, etc. which may be too large for the stand-alone power system (depending upon system design).

There are many good generators available - from economically priced petrol ones to intelligent hybrid diesel power systems. Generators with remote start and/or auto start capability are also available.

What are some petrol/diesel generator differences?
A petrol generator is cheaper than a diesel generator to purchase, but has higher running costs.

A diesel generator has the advantages of long running life, low fuel costs and less maintenance. The initial higher cost is their main disadvantage.

Expected pattern of usage should be taken into account when choosing a generator for a stand-alone power system.
